Pelvic floor therapy is a non-invasive treatment that helps strengthen and support the pelvic floor muscles and ligaments. The pelvic floor is a group of muscles that act like a hammock at the base of the torso, supporting the abdominal and pelvic organs, and playing a role in many bodily functions. Pelvic floor therapy can help treat conditions that affect the pelvic floor, such as: Urinary and fecal incontinence, Constipation, Pelvic organ prolapse, and Sexual dysfunction.
The therapy can also help with pelvic pain and dysfunction caused by muscle weakness and joint alignment issues. It can help improve bladder and bowel control, increase flexibility and coordination, and realign affected joints.
The type of therapy prescribed depends on the patient's symptoms. Some treatments may involve:
- Strengthening
- Exercises to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, such as Kegels
- Relaxing
- Exercises to relax the muscles, or manual therapy to relieve trigger points
- Education
- Patients learn about their pelvic anatomy, how different elements work together, and how hygiene and habits can affect their symptoms
- Other techniques
- Other techniques may include posture correction, retraining habits, neurofascial release, ultrasound, electric stimulation, biofeedback, and instruction with vaginal weights, vaginal dilators, and/or wands
